E-Waste Management

Introduction:

Electronic waste, commonly known as e-waste, refers to electronic products that are obsolete, non-functional, or no longer in use. According to the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, e-waste is defined as electrical and electronic equipment, either in whole or in part, that is discarded as waste by consumers, bulk consumers, or rejected during manufacturing, refurbishment, or repair processes.

E-waste contains several valuable and recoverable materials such as aluminum, copper, gold, silver, plastics, and ferrous metals. By promoting the refurbishment, reuse, and recycling of these materials, we can significantly conserve natural resources and reduce the energy required to manufacture new electronic equipment from virgin raw materials.

However, e-waste also includes hazardous and toxic substances such as mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium, and chromium, along with chemical flame retardants. If not managed responsibly, these substances can contaminate soil and water, posing serious environmental and health risks.

At Shree Computers Sales Pvt. Ltd., we are committed to responsible e-waste management through environmentally sound collection, recycling, and disposal practices that align with regulatory standards and sustainability goals.

Benefits of E-waste Recycling

•Electronics Recycling Conserves Natural Resources

A wide range of valuable materials can be recovered from discarded electronic devices. These reclaimed materials can be utilized in the manufacture of new products, thereby reducing the demand for the extraction of virgin raw materials. For example, various metals can be extracted from computer circuit boards and other electronic components, while the plastics and glass found in computer monitors and televisions can be effectively recycled for reuse.

•Electronics Recycling Supports the Community

Donating used electronic devices significantly contributes to the availability of refurbished products, such as computers and mobile phones, which provide valuable support to low-income families, educational institutions, and not-for-profit organizations. Such donations also promote greater access to technology for individuals who might otherwise be unable to afford these resources.

Electronics Recycling Creates Employment Locally

Given that approximately 90 percent of electronic equipment is recyclable, the electronics recycling industry has the potential to make a substantial contribution to job creation. This growth may occur through the establishment of new recycling enterprises and the expansion of existing firms seeking additional personnel to recover and process recyclable materials. The rising demand for electronics recycling services can serve as a key driver of this employment generation.

Electronics Recycling Helps Protect Public Health and the Environment

Many electronics have toxic or hazardous materials such as mercury and lead, which can be harmful to the environment if disposed of in trashcans. Reusing and recycling electronics safely helps in keeping the hazardous materials from harming humans or the environment. For example, televisions and computer monitors are hazardous since they have lead in them. Printed circuit boards contain harmful materials such as cadmium, lead, mercury and chromium. Also, batteries in computers and other electronics may contain hazardous materials such as cadmium, mercury and lead.
Instead of keeping old electronics in the house or dumping them in landfills, recycling or reusing them is an appropriate option that should be supported by individuals and organizations. Considering the benefits of electronics recycling, it is very important that people in various parts around the world embrace this concept.

Creates Jobs:

E-waste recycling creates new jobs for professional recyclers and creates a second market for the recycled materials.
